I was commissioned in 2016 as a Centennial Artist-in-Residence by the National Park Service (NPS) and its partners – the Connecticut Forest and Park Association and the Appalachian Mountain Club – for a year-long project to create an artistic photographic collection of the New England National Scenic Trail in celebration of the NPS’s 100th anniversary. Also known as the New England Trail or NET, the 235-mile hiking route stretches through 41 communities from Long Island Sound in Connecticut to the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.
Connecticut’s 110-mile portion offers a captivating blend of natural beauty, historic charm, and diverse ecosystems, providing hikers, nature lovers, and artists with a rich and varied outdoor experience. The trail winds its way through some of the state’s most scenic landscapes, from rocky ridges and rugged mountains with sweeping views to dense forests, picturesque farmland, and scenic river banks providing glimpses of wildlife. The trail also passes through quaint New England towns, historic sites, and designated campsites and shelters.
