This series is drawn from a larger collection themed on the interplay between New York City’s maelstrom, claustrophobia, and crass commercialism with its residents and tourists. The dynamic is heightened by photographs of reflective surfaces like shop windows, office buildings, vehicles, and bus shelters. None are manipulated with Photoshop, filters, artificial intelligence, or double exposures.
Like collages, these images reflect back our distorted consciousness about identity, alienation, societal expectations, and perceptions of the other in a competitive culture. Despite a mash-up of three million people colliding within Manhattan’s 23 cramped square miles, we may be looked at, but not always seen or recognized.
Ephemeral moments are frozen to provide an examination of the human condition in a way that cannot be appreciated in real time within the chaotic swirl of energy from which they were extracted. Accidental juxtapositions of symbols, colors, and layers of imagery present a hallucinatory world at the intersection of reality and abstraction.
The series was created at world-renown locations such as Times Square, Penn Station, Broadway, and Radio City and presents a different perspective of New York and ourselves. The mystery, surrealism, and haunting nature of the photographs propel one to resonate with private interpretations about the complexities of human existence buried within the mundane.
