About the Exhibition
New Beginnings opens in Zufall Health’s beautiful new West Orange building. The group exhibition presents themes of renewal, hope, and the beauty of starting anew through representational, abstract, and conceptual works of art, ranging from drawings, paintings, collage, and photographic and digital art.
On view are three of Xiomaro’s landscape photographs selected by curator Amanda Barron. The images are from his independent projects in Ireland and at the Vanderbilt Mansion in New York. None of the images have ever been on public exhibition before.
“I’m glad that my work has been selected as I have personal experience with its themes,” explained Xiomaro, who began as an entertainment attorney and manager representing hip hop, dance, and pop artists. After recovering from cancer, he found peace in the solitude of wandering with a camera and began pursuing photography as an art form. The career change was commemorated by adopting a pseudonym, Xiomaro, which literally means “ready for battle” and honors his roots in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Spain, and the Canary Islands.
About the Arts in Health Program
Zufall brings the world of art to its patients through its Arts In Health Program, which adds another dimension to the care it provides by drawing upon the therapeutic value of art in the healing process. The health center believes that fine art adds a sense of comfort and beauty to an atmosphere traditionally considered sterile, and helps alleviate the anxiety of being in a medical setting.
On a broader scale, Zufall’s intent is to reach beyond its patients and staff to culturally enrich the community by providing new channels for creative expression and by inspiring an appreciation of the arts in individuals who typically may not have access to mainstream visual arts experiences.
Zufall Health is a proud member of the Arts and Culture Collaborative, an association of museums, galleries, theaters, schools, and other organizations from across Morris County. The Collaborative’s mission is to work together to create innovative projects that will benefit the arts, culture, and all citizens of Morris County.
About Zufall Health
The health center began in 1990 by Dr. Robert Zufall and his wife, Kathryn, to provide medical care to poor, mostly immigrant families. Almost instantly, “La Clinica” attracted a growing patient base which, over the years, necessitated expansions of space and hours of operation. Renamed in 2006 to honor the Zufalls, the non-profit health center now proudly carries on their commitment in seven New Jersey counties.
