Washington’s Call to Command

The event at Virginia’s George Washington Birthplace National Monument commemorates the 251st anniversary of George Washington’s appointment as the first Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. The two‑day program begins with a Presentation of the Colors, wreath‑laying ceremony, and Musket Salute conducted by the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard.

Throughout the weekend, the event will feature:

  • A Soldier Camp with equipment displays and daily firing demonstrations
  • Firearms display with Jim Mullins, historian of weapons of the American Revolution and the French and Indian War
  • Black Horse Forge, a veteran‑support blacksmithing guild, operating the park’s forge
  • Campfire cooking demonstrations, highlighting foodways and foraging practices
  • Pop‑up educational activities throughout the Memorial Area and Visitor Center
  • Onsite exhibitor from POHE providing Homespun Movement themed textile booth
  • Standard park operations of the visitor center, Memorial House Museum, and grounds throughout the event.
  • Professional photographer Xiomaro will document event proceedings

The Visitor Center, Memorial House Museum, and grounds, will remain open throughout the event. Click here for more information from the park’s website.
