Aurora

Aurora is a projection gallery exhibition that explores current innovations in photography as part of the Nova 24 Photo + Film Festival. The curators sought projects with a strong preference towards imaginative experimentation and selected 12 artists having “electric bodies of photographic work being developed throughout the country.” These “international players” were invited as part of the organizers’ mission to connect Detroit to the arts scene. The main branch of the Detroit Public Library has been a steady supporter of this effort.

The curators selected images from Xiomaro’s Identity collection. Photographs of reflective surfaces such as shop windows, glass-enclosed bus shelters, polished metal panels, and water resulted in collage-like images that blurred the line between exterior, interior, and emotion reflecting back our distorted consciousness about ourselves. None of the photographs are manipulated with Photoshop, filters, artificial intelligence, or double exposures.
