On December 23, 2015, the Nassau County Legislature unanimously passed Resolution 249-2015 to accept a print from Xiomaro’s photographic collection of President Theodore Roosevelt’s home and summer White House known as Sagamore Hill. The framed 17×25” print is on permanent display in Hearing Room 105 at the Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola. The resolution states that the “print would be invaluable to the residents of Nassau County, as it displays the County’s rich history in connection with the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt.”
The North Room was a social space where Roosevelt family activities took place. The room also contributed to the environment where presidential decision-making, diplomacy, political strategy, and policy discussion continued during summers away from Washington.
Xiomaro created the photograph under a commission by the National Park Service as part of a collection documenting the interiors in a historically rare condition. Sagamore Hill, Roosevelt’s 23-room mansion and summer White House in Long Island underwent a massive and painstaking process of being emptied as part of a three-year, 10 million dollar structural rehabilitation. At the time of the photography, some furnishings remained waiting to be tagged and taken away. Xiomaro’s collection was the first significant body of interior photographs since Samuel Gottscho’s 1966 collection in the Library of Congress, albeit while the rooms were fully-furnished.
