Established in 1851, the Orchard Street Cemetery is the oldest in Dover, New Jersey. The site contains memorials to some of the leading names in early Dover history, Civil War and World War veterans, and even cenotaphs of individuals buried at sea. The original carpenter gothic gatehouse (also known as the receiving house) remains largely untouched since its construction in 1875.
The collection was created for a solo exhibition at Morris County Historical Society at Acorn Hall. The show – Morris County Through the Lens of Time – A Photographic Journey by Xiomaro – creatively captured the essence, features, and historic beauty of the cemetery and several other historic sites throughout Morris County. Three-dimensional historic objects were included to provide a tangible connection to each location.
With over 4,000 souls at rest and each with a unique story, it was a challenge to decide what to photograph. Moreover, mixed feelings arose wandering through this peaceful oasis of grass, trees, and birds which, over time, became surrounded by modern development. In some images, construction can be seen in the background.
