I know that I’m glad for Times Square. There is always something or someone of interest.
I like how this fellow was just relaxing by the railing letting it all hang out. He is definitely comfortable in his own skin.
What really caught my attention was the bright orange robe in contrast with his skin tone, long black hair, and sunglasses.
When I photograph on the street, I have to think and work fast. So there is often other information about the scene that is subconsciously registering in my brain.
When I looked at this image at the studio, I realized that I was also picking up on other compositional elements. His vertical position with his orange robe mirrors the orange road cone.
Other color contrasts include the pink umbrella that almost appears to be hovering over him. The umbrella is repeated with the teal one next to it with teal chairs underneath. And there are hints of green chairs on either side of him along with the green Starbucks sign above. Together the colors almost suggest an abstracted take on Holi.
This photograph was made yesterday and today, June 7, is “Wear Orange Day” in support of a future free from gun violence.
Is there a connection? I don’t know. What do you think?
